Today in class . . . Students identified the elements of an argument in an informational text. We used Action magazines in class, but if you were absent, you can use any magazine or newspaper article. With clock partner, students read and article using text features to help them. Then they identified the parts of an argument and recorded them on the outline attached below.
Today in class . . .
Students learned how to write paragraphs that included all of the elements of an argument. We practiced this by writing two paragraphs. Then we highlighted the following parts in these colors: Pink=Claim Blue=Reason Yellow=Evidence Underline=Inference If you missed class, you must write two paragraphs and highlight their parts. Paragraph #1: What is the best part of Thanksgiving? Paragraph #2: What do you want for Christmas, and why should you get it? Here is my example paragraph: Winter is the best season. I believe winter is the best season because it is the most enjoyable one. Winter is enjoyable because people can participate in unique activities. Some such outdoor activities are these: sledding, skiing, and ice skating. People also enjoy unique activities with their families during Christmas and New Year's. These activities are enjoyable and unique to winter, so winter is the best. Today in class . . . We took our Personification and Euphemism quiz. Then we learned how to outline an argument. We worked with partners to outline the argument that yesterday's TED talk was making.
Today in class . . .
We played a review game. Tomorrow's quiz will cover all 8 examples of figurative language that we have studied so far. Then we watched this TED talk called "Remember to say Thank You." We identified the speaker's claim and three pieces of evidence she included to help prove her point. Today in class . . . We started a two day assignment. If you missed class you will need a magazine and the assignment attached below to complete the assignment.
Today in class . . . We identified and explained text features that we found in magazines. The assignment is attached below. You can find more than one example of each text feature. You can use any magazine to make up this activity.
Today in class . . . We took our pun & oxymoron quiz. Then we finished our inferences activity from yesterday.
Today in class . . . We practiced making inferences while reading informational texts. This activity will take two days. The materials for activity are attached below. The three pictures are the checks you need and the word file is the assignment.
Today in class . . . We used funny pictures of Santas to practice writing effective titles and captions. Here is the PowerPoint with the pictures. The assignment is also attached below.
Today in class . . . We learned about Veteran's Day by analyzing 3 very different texts. 1. We watched a movie on the history of Veterans' Day. 2. We speed-read an article about helping Veterans'. 3. We analyzed the poem "In Flander's Fields."
Today in class . . . We took our quiz on hyperbole & understatement. If you missed it, use the document below to take it. Bring your answers to me; I will grade them.
Today in class . . . There was a substitute because Ms. Norr attended the UCTE conference. Students choose one of the nonfiction books from yesterday to look at in detail. They practiced writing quotes, summaries, and paraphrases from the book they chose. The Self-Starter quiz is postponed until Monday.
Today in class . . . We did the first half of our assignment that we will finish on Friday when the sub is here. Each student looked at 5-6 books about African American's after the Civil War. They determined if the book was Fiction or Non-Fiction and identified text features that were used. On Friday , students will choose one of the nonfiction books to look at in detail. They will practice writing quotes, summaries, and paraphrases from the book they chose.
Today in class . . .
We took notes on text features. Then we identified those text features in our class novel using sticky notes. Today in class . . . We finished reading Stolen Into Slavery. The we wrote book reviews on it. The assignment sheet is attached below.
Today in class . . . We took our simile & metaphor quiz. If you missed it, you can find it below or in the sidebar. Then we read our class novel. We will finish it tomorrow!
