Students took notes on steps to take when interpreting poems. Today in class . . . Students created a poster with a common example of figurative language in the box. We wrote a found poem by searching/mining a few pages from our class novel for "golden nuggets" that we could arrange into a poem. This poem needed to represent one of the important themes from our book. The stages of writing this poem, in case you were absent, are these: Step 1: Choose a powerful excerpt (1-2 pages) from The Graveyard Book. Step 2: Mine/find 10 important phrases (2-6 words) from the book. Step 3: Arrange those phrases like a poem. A. Make the lines short. B. Add end punctuation for the end of each line. C. Add words or lines needed for it to make sense. Step 4: Write a compound sentence explaining what people should learn/think about after reading your poem. (This is the theme.) Students took notes on the difference between figurative and literal language. Then we sorted examples from out book into literal and figurative language. After that, we sorted our figurative language into simile and metaphor groups.
