Today in class . . . We finished taking our smiley face tricks notes. Please refer to the file attached to review or complete your notes. We also started researching for our "I Am What I Am" poems using the research tool in google docs. Please see google classroom for directions.
Today in class . . . We started brainstorming for our "I Am What I Am" poem. The assignment for it is attached below. We will work on this poem for the the next 5 days.
Today in class . . . Students practiced using the first three smiley face trick in their poetry brainstorming. We completed the front page our the List of 12 Poem attached below. We brainstormed on each topic for one minute. We were listing poetry ingredients in the box below the topic. The topics are listed below here:
Today in class . . . We continued our Smiley Face Tricks notes and practice. Students created a misinterpreted figurative language poster. The poster template is attached below.
Today in class . . . I was gone for the Utah Council of Teachers of English convention. Students took guided notes on the study guide attached below and then worked on problems 1-10. We will correct this study guide in class after Thanksgiving. The quiz on Figurative Language will be in the 2nd or 3rd week of December.

We took our Spelling and Punctuation Quiz through google classroom. This is the last quiz we will take this quarter. Students need to make sure that all of their quiz scores are accurate before October 27th because I have to record and finalize scores on that day. Students who were unable to complete a peer review can have someone review theirs and home, or complete it after the break. Today in class . . . Students wrote different types of sentences to review what has happened so far in our book. They had peers review and critique each sentence in preparation for our quiz next week. Students who were absent need to fill out the paper attached below.
Today in class . . .
Students wrote sentences about their experience in the storm. Then we practiced combining them to make compound and complex sentences. Afterwards we read from chapter #6 in the book. Students who were absent do not need to make up anything. Today in class . . .
Students took the writing pre-test. Students who missed a day of pre-testing will make up the testing during spartan forum and this will be organized by the school, not by Ms. Norr. Today in class . . . Students started working on their critical event newspaper page. The template for this assignment is attached below. The purpose of this assignment is for students to slow down and consider how the community would have reacted to and perceived what happened in the park between Johnny and Bob. Students are encouraged to use powerful word choice and a variety of sentences in their newspaper page.

We started take the SAGE pre-test. Most students nearly finished the writing test. On Friday we will take the reading pre-test. *Students should bring their own headphones on Friday if they have them. Today in class . . .
We finished and turned in our Exposition assignment and our letter to a hero. Afterwards, we finished reading chapter #4 of our book and turned in our theme prediction. Today in class . . .
We received up-to-date grade sheets and passed back graded work. We watched a video about 9/11, and we wrote gratitude letters to servicemen and women. Hinton and analyzed how the author's beliefs influence the text.

We took notes on types of sentences and practiced writing complex sentences. We also finished reading the rising action of chapter #3. Today in class . . . We turned in reading log #1 and received reading log #2. Students started reading chapter #3 and practiced writing themes.

Students met with classmates who studied the same character. They made predictions about topics that will come up in the book. Using these topics they started thinking about a theme they would like to learn about this year. We also finished reading chapter #2. Today in class . . .
Students chose a character to create a character poster for. They reviewed Ponyboy's description of the character from Chapter #1 and listened to chapter #2 as they worked. Character posters were turned in today. Today in class . . .
Students filled our a self-evaluation of the skills we would cover in this unit. Student also set a goal for what they wanted to work on and finished reading chapter #1. Today in class . . .
We started reading our class novel. We focused on finding the parts of speech as we read. Today in class . . .
We put together our class notebooks and then went to the library. Students are expected to have their notebook in class each day. Tomorrow students will be expected to have a personal reading book in class. Today in class . . . |
