We finished drafting our stories. Then a few of us did a express lane peer edit with a partner. Today in class . . .
After reading to page 83 of our book, we started drafting our personal narratives. We will finish drafting them tomorrow and do a peer review before we go to the lab on Wednesday. Today in class . . . We played a review game and took our commas quiz. We also turned in our unused oops cards and hall passes for extra credit.
Today in class . . . We turned in Reading Log #4. We also read through the project guidelines for our 3 Months in Junior High stories. Afterwards we outlined our stories by creating a storyboard. See the guidelines and storyboard attached below.
Today in class . . . We took notes in our language gems section about active and helping verbs. Then we watched the music video for Amazing Grace. This hymn is the personal narrative of a former slave ship captain. The second time we listened to the song, we circled active and helping verbs in the lyrics using the Smartboard. Lastly, we brainstormed 10 active verbs that we could use in our personal narratives. Then we turned our brainstorming papers in.

Ms. Norr introduced our next project. We will be writing a one-page personal narrative about something that has happened so far this year. This narrative needs to focus on one specific event. Students will write their story just as Solomon wrote his in 12 Years a Slave. We brainstormed 8 events we could write about. Then we chose our 4 favorite ideas. For each of those four ideas, we listed sensory details (thing the 5 senses notice) that we would include in our story. We also listed important dialogue (things people said) that would need to be included. Today in class . . .
We graded our reading strategies test. Afterwards, we read through page #69 of our book. These pages were difficult ones to read. We discussed as a class some of the hard things Solomon was forced to do. We made many text-to-world and some text-to-self connections as we considered peoples choices when they are afraid. We did not take a self-starter quiz today since it was such a short week. We will continue studying our comma rules next week and take the quiz on Thursday, October 23rd. Today in class . . .
We took the reading strategies test. If you missed class, you must make up the test before next Wednesday or it will not make it on your term grade. I am not available before school. But you can come in during spartan forum, study hall, or after school. Today in class . . . We worked with partners to fill out our test review sheet. This sheet went hope with students to help them prepare for the test tomorrow. If you missed class, I have attached the review sheet below. I have also attached the reading strategy notes.
Today in class. . . We took our punctuation marks quiz. We also presented our reading process posters in small groups. As students presented their classmates took notes on how their reading process were the same and different. If you missed class, you will need to take notes on four of the posters displayed in the classroom.
Today in class . . .
We finished our reading process posters, practiced for our quiz tomorrow and got ready to present our posters tomorrow. Today in class . . .
We created posters that represent how we as individuals make meaning out of texts. We chose at least 5 of the strategies that we have studied in class to use. We also brainstormed 2 strategies that are unique to us. The poster also need to include a chart, graphic, or image that could represent how our minds work. We will present them Friday in small groups. Today in class . . .
We graded our quizzes from Friday. We also reported on the past two days with the substitute. Afterwards, we finished reading chapter #5 of our book. Today in class . . . (there was a substitute) We took notes on the elements of a letter. Then we brainstormed about what Solomon might have told his family if he could have written them a letter while he was on the boat to New Orleans. Remember he wrote a letter but it was for an attorney, not his family. Afterwards we imagined what Solomon would write to his family now that he has been a slave for over 2 years. This is the part of the assignment that I will be grading. If you missed it, it is attached below.
Today in class . . . (there was a substitute) We took our subject and predicates quiz. If you missed it please take the quiz and bring it to me to grade. It is attached below. We also practice using our reading strategies as we read the first few pages of chapter #5. The assignment is also attached below.
Today in class . . .
We finished and graded our context clues assignment from yesterday. We also studied for our quiz tomorrow. Today in class . . . We discussed our last reading strategy. It is using context clues. Students use context clues to guess what the meaning of an unfamiliar word is. For today's assignment, we read the first 2 pages of chapter #5. I have removed 15 words from those pages and left blanks. You need to write your answers 1-15. I have scrambled the 15 words I took out and posted them below. You will need the document below too.
