Today in class . . . We finished taking notes on our smiley face tricks. Students can use the document attached below to review and practice the tricks for our upcoming quiz. We also started labeling and adding smiley face tricks in our stories. Each student is required use at least 7 smiley face tricks in their story. Each trick should be labeled in the same that we labeled elements of fiction with the label in parenthesis after the sentence. For example if I wrote the simile, "The room smelled like rotten eggs." (Figurative Language) More directions for today are posted on google classroom.

We learned about tagging our evidence. Students added tag phrases to the facts they will include in their stories. Please see further directions on google classroom. Today in class . . . We continued our Smiley Face Tricks notes and practice. Students created a misinterpreted figurative language poster. The poster template is attached below.
Today in class . . . I was gone for the Utah Council of Teachers of English convention. Students took guided notes on the study guide attached below and then worked on problems 1-10. We will correct this study guide in class after Thanksgiving. The quiz on Figurative Language will be in the 2nd or 3rd week of December.

We took our Spelling and Punctuation Quiz through google classroom. This is the last quiz we will take this quarter. Students need to make sure that all of their quiz scores are accurate before October 27th because I have to record and finalize scores on that day. Today in class . . .
We graded and turned in the reading comprehension questions we had been working on for a few days. Here are the questions and directions if you were absent. Reading Comprehension Questions Directions: Choose 4 questions from the list below. Answer each question carefully using three complete sentences. Your first sentence should be your answer, your second is your evidence from the book, and your third is your elaboration. 1. What were the dead excited for? 2. What do the flowers cause and represent? 3. Who is the lady on the gray? What does she do? 4. Where do you think the music comes from? 5. Why didn't Silas join in? 6. Why do the dead not speak of the Macabre to the living? Today in class . . . Sub. Students read the short story Priscilla and the Wimps with partners. Afterwards, they completed the study guide together. The study guide will prepare students for the quiz tomorrow.
Sub Today in class . . . Students completed the assignment below by identifying and describing types of conflicts. Afterwards, they read the next quarter of chapter #5. This work was done individually and is due on Oct. 5th.

Students took guided notes o types of characters and conflicts. Afterwards we finished reading chapter #4 and practiced identifying types of characters and conflicts in our book. Today in class . . . Students worked with partners to fill out the house plan about a theme in their poem. The poem is attached to yesterday's post. The house plan is attached below. Students annotated this poem in preparation for writing an argument about its theme. We will write the argument outline tomorrow in class. Students wrote different types of sentences to review what has happened so far in our book. They had peers review and critique each sentence in preparation for our quiz next week. Students wrote sentences about their experience in the storm. Then we practiced combining them to make compound and complex sentences. Afterwards we read from chapter #4 in the book. Students who were absent do not need to make up anything. Today in class . . . Students worked in groups to create words using prefixes, root words, and suffixes. The group with the most total points at the end of class earned +2 extra credit points. Students who were absent need to complete front only of the assignment below.
Today in class . . . Students turned in reading log #2 and received reading log #3 (attached below and in the sidebar). We also finished reading chapter two and practiced types of sentences by summarizing the lesson Bod learned in this chapter.

Students worked on their parts of speech poster while I read the beginning of Chapter #3 to them. Students were required to identify on their posters these things: 1. 5 proper nouns 2. 5 common nouns 3. 10 adjectives 4. 5 verbs 6. 3 helping verbs 7. 10 adjectives 8. 6 prepositions Extra credit was given to students who chose a favorite work in each section, chose a color to symbolize it, colored the square that color and explained the symbolism of it. Then we read started practicing those sentences with the assignment attached below. This assignment will be completed tomorrow in class.
