We turned in reading log #9 and received reading log #10. We wrote the introduction and the first body paragraph for an argument essay in response to this prompt. Table Essay Prompt The State of Utah needs more money for public schools. They could save money by following Idaho’s example and having a 4-day school week. Eighty minutes would be added to every school day. School would start at 7:30 and end at 3:40. School would only be held Monday-Thursday. Should this change be made? Would the benefits outweigh the costs? Write an essay in which you take a position on whether the school week should be shortened. Use the information presented in the passage to support your points. Make sure to include information from the passage in your essay. Today in class . . .
We played an essay writing review game with the whiteboards and markers. Remember, your first reading log of the semester is due tomorrow. Today in class . . . Students filled out a self-evaluation where they rated their confidence level with various skills related to argument and expository writing.

After we took our quiz on evidence, students finished their outlines so that they were ready to do a peer review. For the peer review, students exchanged outlines, read them, and then left 2 comments. Today in class . . . 1) We analyzed this prompt. 2) We read the article attached below and looked for evidence that would support all of the possible answers to the prompt. 3) We wrote our own outlines using evidence from the article. Today in class . . . We practiced writing introduction and body paragraphs about whether the mythical Jack Frost was a hero or not. Students had to used evidence from the article attached below. Not from the movie "Rise of the Guardians."

We took our self-starter quiz on reasons. The quiz can be found in the right side bar under quizzes. Afterwards, we read a partner's essay and wrote a peer review on it. Here is the rubric we used for our peer review. Students wrote a 1 sentence summary for each category explaining what their partner did well and could work on. Then they gave them a score 1-4 for each category. The average of the 3 scores is their total score. Today in class . . .
Students finished their outlines and essays. Students who were absent should finish their essays as homework and have them tomorrow in class. Today in class . . . Students started working on this essay. The prompt and articles for the essay are below. Students read and annotated all of the articles today. Prompt: Write an essay in which you describe what California is doing to limit the devastation of this drought. Identify the most important issues the drought is causing and explain what California is doing to address those issues.
Today in class . . . We talked about the importance of using tag phrases to introduce the evidence that we take from our sources. We finished the front side of this assignment. The assignment and article that we are using are in the document below.

We got off to a great start for the new term. Students received new oops cards and hall passes. They also found new clock partners. We spent a little time review how to to outline an expository essay. Today in class . . . We practiced four steps to help us read and understand essay prompts. After students analyzed four prompts with their groups, they wrote a prompt in response to the article at this link. The prompt should be written on the back of this assignment.
Today in class . . . We read two articles paying attention to the different expository modes that writers used. Then we read 3 example summaries and determined which on was the best. After that, we wrote our own summary that used a variety of expository modes. The articles and assignment are attached below.
Today in class . . . We finished playing Transition Uno wrote four example sentences for each type of transition. These sentences are the last assignment that will go on this term's grade.
