We reviewed the main things that students needed to improve in their "This He Believed Statements." Then we looked at theses to holocaust-themed mentor texts. 1. Speak Up 2. Peace Can Happen After studying these, students chose 5 sentences to imitate. They added these imitations to their Pre-Writing Assignment from Friday. This assignment will be turned in on Wednesday. Then students drafted their essays.

We brainstormed these things for our "This I Believe Statements." 1st: Experiences (at least 5) 2nd: Beliefs (at least 3) 3rd: So What Statements (at least 2) Lastly, we decided who are target audience would be. Then we drafted a first paragraph for your statements. Today in class . . .
Students who were not done with the test finished it. We had a discussion about the test. Lastly, we created idiom posters. Students took the SAGE Reading and Language test in the SLIM lab.
Today in class . . . We took our commas quiz. Then we listened to two more examples of This I Believe speeches. Using these as examples, students started drafting "This I Believe" speeches for a character from our book. We will type up these one-page statements on Monday and Tuesday in class. Attached below is the rubric for this project.

Students wrote a response to an index card they wrote one month ago. Here are the directions for that paragraph: Reflection Directions: Write a response to your unity vs. mutiny paragraph. Explain how your perspective has changed or remained the same after finishing the book. Point out the most influential or powerful parts of the story. Describe how they changed your perspective. Then we reviewed our "This He Believed Proposals." After wards we listened to a few famous examples of "This I Believe Statements." Here are a few: 1. Jackie Robinson 2. Temple Grandin 3. Eleanor Roosevelt 4. Bill Gates 5. Colin Powell Today in class . . .
We finished reading our book Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World. Then we had a silent discussion. Students worked with their table groups commenting on, and answering questions about the book. Today in class . . .
We are reviewing these comma rules for this weeks self starter: Comma Rules 1. Put a comma before FANBOYS in compound sentences. 2. Put a comma after the AWWUBBIS clause in a complex sentence. 3. Put commas around interrupters. 4. Put commas between items in a list. 5. Put commas after introductory phrases. Our assignment for today was titled "Journal Entries." Students filled a half-page with a journal entry about something that happened over Spring Break. They payed attention to commas and tried to include sentences that followed each comma rule from above. Then we read through page 117 of our book. Afterwards, we wrote a short journal entry from the perspective of one of the characters in our book. Students were required to write at least 4 sentences and us 2 commas correctly in this entry. The assignment was turned in today. |
