We turned in reading log #9 and received reading log #10. We wrote the introduction and the first body paragraph for an expository essay in response to this prompt. Table Essay Prompt The State of Utah needs more money for public schools. They could save money by following Idaho’s examples and having a 4-day school week. Eighty minutes would be added to every school day. School would start at 7:30 and end at 3:40. School would only be held Monday-Thursday. Write a 3-4 paragraph essay in which you compare and contrast the 4 and 5 day school week plans. Today in class . . .
We played an essay writing review game with whiteboards. Remember, your first reading log of the semester is due tomorrow. Today in class . . . Students each filled out a self-evaluation about their confidence in writing argument and expository essays. Then students had the day to work on missing work and work or their reading logs.
Today in class . . . We took our evidence quiz. Then we finished the modes hunt that we started yesterday. Students will need a red literature book to complete this assignment.
Today in class . . . Using our Jack - Frost Venn Diagrams and the article attached below, we wrote article outlines on our own. Individual Prompt #3 In Europe and North America, people invented myths to explain phenomenon that they could not understand. Jack Frost is an example of on such myth. In a 2-3 paragraph essay explain the problems Europeans and Americans were facing and how the myth of Jack Frost solved these problems.

We took notes on the best ways to outline for expository essays. With our groups, we wrote outlines for these two prompts. Group Prompt #1 The legend of Jack Frost is very old. It has many historical roots. However traditions disagree on how Jack Frost came to be. In a 3-4 paragraph essay explain the process Jack Frost went through to become who he is in the movie Rise of the Guardians. Use specific examples from the film to demonstrate this sequence. Group Prompt #2 Most countries with western European heritage have a Jack Frost myth. In a 2-3 paragraph essay, compare the different Jack Frost myths presented in this article. Today in class . . . Students filled out these guided notes about the 6 different modes of expository writing. We did "research" on Jack Frost by watching these clips from the movie "Rise of the Guardians. We will write expository essays about him during the next few days.

We worked on our essays. Students finished their outlines and started their introduction paragraphs. Students who were absent should come to class with a finished outline and an introduction written too. Today in class . . . We started working on this essay. The prompt is below and the documents used for it are attached below. Students should have read and annotated all of the documents today. Prompt: Write a argument essay in which you make a claim about whether humans can be successful against such an impossible challenge like a drought. Use evidence from all of the articles. Explain how this evidence shows that humans can or cannot be successful against impossible challenges.

Welcome or welcome back! We got new oops cards and hall passes today. We also got new clock partners. We also did a quick mini-lesson on writing conclusions. Today in class . . .
Students looked for evidence in their articles to use in their paragraphs. Most students finished drafting their paragraph today. Today in class . . . We learned a simple way to plan and write introduction paragraphs for argument essays. We analyzed an example and wrote two example funnels with our groups. The power point attached below explains what we did. We did not turn anything in.
Today in class . . . We started working on our group essay. This essay will be due on the last day of the term. The prompt and articles for the essay are in the document attached below.
